For her first institutional solo exhibition, Dominican-American artist Tiffany Alfonseca explores the nuances and complexities of Black Latinx experiences through a series of new paintings inspired by family photographs.
En su primera exposición institucional individual, la artista Dominicana-Americana Tiffany Alfonseca explora matices y complejidades en las experiencias de lo Negrx Latinx a traves de una serie de pinturas nuevas inspiradas por fotografías familiares.
About the Exhibition.
De las manos que nos crearon is a portrait of family forged through the stories of grandmothers, mothers, and daughters. Every picture hanging in the exhibition space corresponds to a family photograph that that captures an intimate moment in the life of the artist, her loved ones, or her friends. A grandmother’s wedding day, a mother’s quinceañera, a day at the beach, and a house party hold the painterly spaces of beauty, leisure, and rest that historically have been denied in depictions of Black and Brown people. Collectively, these works challenge a genre that for too long has serviced mostly those who lack the imaginative capacity to see racialized bodies as fully human. Here, portraiture and home are bound at the center of a universe of complex narratives that are at once empowering and oppressive. For each instance of celebration, there is another that reminds us of class inequalities, struggles with patriarchy, and divisions instigated by colorism. The call and response between joy and pain that shapes the lives of Black Latinx people reverberates not in the abstract but in every embodied occasion. At a time when much figurative painting trends towards the idealized and aspirational to prove the universal worth of its subjects to the broadest possible public, Tiffany takes the majesty of the people in her life as a non-negotiable starting point. Secure in that truth, she moves past idealized visions of Latinidad and Blackness to pose difficult questions about how the two are inextricably connected and divided, especially in the most quotidian moments. Installed as a photo album of sorts that traverses histories and geographies, the exhibition aspires to highlight the nuances and complexities of Black Latinx experiences and their anchoring role in understanding Latinidad in America.
The exhibition, the artist’s most ambitious to date, debuts over 20 new works created during a residency she conducted at TMR in Summer 2021. A series of in-person, virtual, and hybrid programs exploring practices of care for Black and Brown bodies will accompany the exhibition.

De las manos que nos crearon es un retrato de familia recreado mediante las historias de las abuelas, las madres y las hijas. Cada imagen en la exposición corresponde a una foto familiar que captura un momento íntimo en la vida de la artista, sus seres queridos o sus amistades. La boda de la abuela, los quinceaños de una madre, un día en la playa y una fiesta guardan espacios pictóricos de belleza, ocio y descanso, que han sido históricamente negados en las representaciones de personas negras y morenas. En conjunto, estas obras desafían un género que, durante demasiado tiempo, ha servido principalmente a quienes no tienen la capacidad imaginativa de ver a los cuerpos racializados como completamente humanos. Aquí, el retrato y el hogar están unidos al centro de un universo de complejas narrativas a la vez empoderadoras y opresivas. Por cada celebración, hay otro indicio que recuerda las desigualdades de clase, las luchas contra el patriarcado y las divisiones generadas por el colorismo. Segura de esta verdad, deja atrás visiones idealizadas de la Latinidad y la Negritud, cuestionando cómo ambas están innegablemente conectadas y divididas, sobre todo desde el instante cotidiano. Instalada como un album de fotos que atraviesa historias y geografias, esta exposición resalta matices y complejidades en las experiencias de lo Negrx Latinx y su anclaje en la comprensión de la Latinidad en América.
La exposición es una de las más ambiciosas de la artista hasta la fecha e incluye mas de 20 obras nuevas creadas durante una residencia realizada en TMR en el verano del 2021. Una serie de programas que exploran prácticas restauradoras para cuerpos negros y morenos acompañara la exposición.
About the Artist.
Tiffany Alfonseca (b. 1994) is a Bronx-based Dominican-American artist whose practice explores the nuances and complexities of Black Latinx experiences. Drawing from her lived experiences, Alfonseca creates works that acknowledge and value the ways Black and Brown people represent themselves while challenging their depiction by others in both art history and popular culture. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including at Jenkins Johnson Gallery, New York, UTA Artist Space, Los Angeles, and Gallery 1957, London. Alfonseca has been included in such publications as Harper’s BAZAAR, Juxtapoz Magazine, and Artsy. Her work is included in collections such as The Dean Collection and the Perez Art Museum Miami. She received her BFA from The School of Visual Arts.

Tiffany Alfonseca (n. 1994) es una artista Dominicana-Americana basada en el Bronx, Nueva York, cuya práctica explora matices y complejidades en las experiencias de lo Negrx Latinx. Tomando de sus experiencias vividas, Alfonseca crea obras que reconocen y valoran las formas por cuales personas negras y morenas se representan a si mismas. Al mismo tiempo su obra cuestiona como otrxs historicamente representatan a esas personas en el arte y la cultura popular. Ha expuesto en sedes nacionales e internacionales incluyendo Jenkins Johnson Gallery, Nueva York, UTA Artist Space, Los Angeles y Gallery 1957, Londres.
